I used to consider myself a bit of a tomboy, and even though my holey jeans, shaved head parts, and Metallica t-shirt days are (somewhat) behind me, I am and always will be a Shampoo Whore. That is to say: I've tried almost all of them. The horsey shampoo to grow my hair long; the Aussie shampoo to keep it from buildup; the Dove shampoo to see if marketing really works; the Burts Bees shampoo because I hate parabens and animal testing.

Ah, the power of makeup. It is the most practical application of art in our society, and for good reason. We <3 it! For women, it signifies a coming of age (albeit this is happening at younger and younger ages; I mean, really, 4-year-olds hardly need to enhance their natural youthfulness), and it provides an (often daily) creative outlet. (I mean, have you SEEN some of the amazing video tutorials by my fellow Hot Ink contributors? Fabulous.) For men, it can be the exercise of freedom from the set gender roles in our society! How empowering! It is the epitome of personal expression, right after clothes. I mean, what can be more personal than your face? (Let us not speak of vagazzeling, forsooth.)

But for me, makeup takes real precedence during my favorite time of year: Halloween. This is when boys can be girls, girls can be ghouls, and ghouls can be...Lindsay Lohan. (*shudder*)

Detox Your Mani: SpaRitual is taking O.P.I. to School

Don't get me wrong: I love O.P.I. In fact, most of my nail polish collection--at least, the ones that matter--are O.P.I. I fell in love with O.P.I. at my favorite day spa, so I was shocked when I went in for my last mani/pedi and found that they had changed the entire line. No more O.P.I. !!!

But, they had traded out for another line that I am quickly falling into obsession with: SpaRitual.

This stuff is addictive, but for all the right reasons. It is vegan, animal friendly, formaldehyde and toluene free, and DBP free. (DBP is dibutyl-pthalate, and I had to look it up. I found this uber helpful site about the toxic chemicals in nail polish, if you're interested.)
