Missoni For Target: Becoming a Fashion Victim
The Missoni for Target collection has been hyped for about the last month and a half with a television commercial featuring women in head to toe zig zags in an array of aggressive colors. They were fun, kicky, and a bit retro in that late 60s early 70s kind of way and I was curious to see the clothes for myself when the line launched.

Birth Control Recall
Author: jM
I don't mean to be an alarmist, ladies, but CHECK YOUR BIRTH CONTROL NOW. In news that will make your uterus cringe (I know mine did in solidarity), NPR has reported that a recall has been issued for a bunch of birth control pills due to a "packaging mix-up" by their Alabama-based manufacturer. Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, a company responsible for the production of many generic drugs including many oral contraceptive brands, issued a press release through their parent company Endo Pharmaceuticals stating:
Qualitest Pharmaceuticals today issued a voluntary, nationwide, retail-level recall of multiple lots of oral contraceptives. The recall is being implemented because of a packaging error, where select blisters were rotated 180 degrees within the card, reversing the weekly tablet orientation and making the lot number and expiry date no longer visible. This packaging error and the potential for this error to have affected other oral contraceptive products resulted in the company issuing the recall of multiple lots.
Basically, you could be completely unprotected on the days you thought you were covered. Not only could you get your period unexpectedly (probably on the one day you decide to frolic in a white dress in a all-white room), you could wind up with an unplanned pregnancy. So, if you have been counting on birth control as your sole method of contraception, now is a good time to start investing in condoms. The press release went on to say that pharmacies have been ordered to contact potentially affected consumers. But, no need to wait for that. A list of the brands and the lot numbers in question can be found in this PDF. Hopefully, the word will get out before too many women are adversely effected by this. Though considering the timing, if there are a slew of prom babies next spring, we'll know why.

JCPenney, Forever 21, and Demeaning Shirts: Update!
Author: jM
Yesterday, I brought you news of the Internet outrage directed toward JCPenney and Forever 21 over a couple of shirts marketed toward young women that displayed demeaning and outdated messages.
The shirts in question, raised the eyebrows and ire of many women because they implied that girls are too dumb and busy with superficial pursuits like shopping, looking pretty, and boys to be bothered doing homework or liking math and should get their brothers to do it for them.
JCPenney pulled the shirts from their website soon after the dust up, and today, Forever 21 has followed suit. ABCNews.com reports that Forever 21 has stated that they will be removing the shirt from the website. The retailers senior marketing manager, Linda Chang, said in a statement:

“Our merchandise is intended to appeal to all audiences, not to offend them. We would like to apologize to our customers as our intent was not to discredit education and we are taking the proper actions necessary.”
Hopefully, more retailers will learn from this and stop trying to perpetuate that learning and education are uncool for girls.

Empower Your Girls, Don't Demean Them
Author: jM
Almost a week ago, JCPenny sparked controversy across the Internet when two shirt designs available on the retailer's website were deemed offensive. The shirts, made for girls age 7-16, were called into question not for their fugly (IMO) designs but for the pretty sexist statement they sent.
One of the shirts read "I'm too pretty to do HOMEWORK, so my brother has to do it for me." The other tee lists "My Best Subjects" as "boys, shopping, music, and dancing", in that order. It wasn't long before the outrage got back to the JCPenney offices, leading them to remove the shirts from the website.

Author: Pinky McLadybits
Nice Kicks has an article detailing writer Mike Halfhill's sneak peak at a big Nike announcement: The possibility of Marty McFly shoes (you know the ones, the ones that automatically fit Marty's foot in Back To The Future II?). My husband is going to be idiotically excited about this. I can hear him now, singing, "WE GOTTA GO BACK IN TIIIME!" Anyway, Nice Kicks also has this awesome video on their site:
FDA Warns Brazilian Blowout Company About Toxicity In Its Products
Author: Pinky McLadybits
Danger from formaldehyde in hair straightening products sounds like the opening of a zombie movie. The zombie apocalypse won't be from a bite, but from straightening product! Seriously though, read this article from WebMD and if you use the products distributed by Brazilian Blowout Company, maybe stop until this all gets settled. Health before beauty, right?
