Hey there! Do you like the much vaunted smokey eye look? Have you purchased brushes and kits that claim to be designed to achieve it? How long have you stared at pictorials that claim to be fool proof? Have you sat around staring at your bathroom mirror with products spread before you trying to perfect the balance between light and dark that would make you look mysterious and alluring? Well, I have good news! I’ve found a product that eliminates most of those steps and is easily used by anyone who is familiar with crayons.

NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil in Slate is the perfect smokey eye facilitator for ladies of all makeup applying abilities. The large, stubby pencil shape is big enough that it fits comfortably in your hand and is easy to swipe across your lid. The wide tip creates a wide line that can cover your eyelid in one or two good swipes and the creamy texture of the pigment spreads easily. Unfortunately that same creamy quality makes the color easily smudgeable, so be sure to use it with an eyeshadow primer.

So about that smokey eye? Start with a lid with primer applied. Take the pencil and sweep it across your lid so that your eye is covered from lash line to just above the crease. After that, take a black eyeliner and trace along the lash line with a nice thick line, and then a lighter sparkly shade and spread it from the inside corner of your eye up and above your crease to the outside corner of the eye. Three steps and you’ve got your smokey eye look. If you want to get fancy with some extra smudging or shading once you’ve got the basics down, a world of possibilities will open up for you.

NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil is a great tool to have in your makeup kit for fast, easily applied eye color. It works wonderfully in a basic smokey eye though, because it wipes off easily, be sure to use a primer underneath. I give it a 7 out of 8.
