Figgy is Insane: Philosophy Hope In a Jar

Author: Lainey

Ok, first of all, I feel like I need to state that Figgy... well, she's ALWAYS wrong.  I don't say that to be mean, it's just a fact.

I've used Philosophy's Hope in a Jar for 3+ years.  I use it morning and night, except in the winter months when I switch to Philosophy's The Miracle Worker for the nighttime application, because I need a heavier cream when it's so dry outside.   I love the way it goes on and my skin absorbs the Hope in a Jar cream and doesn't feel greasy, but it feels saturated.  I'm not sure how to explain that.  It feels like my face is cool and damp, but it doesn't feel like the moisturizer is sitting on top of my skin waiting to slide off my face.  Does that help?

I have an OBNOXIOUSLY sensitive sense of smell.  I'm the first person in the office to smell (and bitch about) burning popcorn (I'm not even going to go on a rant about how I feel about burning popcorn, but I WILL say, come on, people!  This isn't new technology. Stand there and listen while the popcorn is popping, ok?), or an applicant's perfume, or whether Sonya in Accounting got yet another cat.  I can smell things is what I'm saying.  To me, Hope in a Jar has a *slightly* medicinal smell, maybe with a hint of plastic, but it doesn't smell AT ALL strong to me!  Nor does it smell like burning.  I will concede that I have used it for a long time, so it's entirely possible that I don't notice the smell anymore, but I really am sensitive to strong odors, so I feel like I never would have continued using it if it smelled really bad, especially because it's not a cheap moisturizer!   If it reeked, I would have dumped it in a heartbeat and picked up something less expensive.

However, after reading Figgy's (probably wrong) review and some of the reviews on Sephora, I started wondering if there was an ingredient in the Hope in a Jar that certain people are sensitive to.  Like with cilantro?  Some people can't stand the taste of cilantro and think it tastes exactly like soap, and that's a REAL thing.  It's documented.  I don't know where, but somewhere, and it's genetic or something. (FINE, I looked it up, that's how much I care about You People - http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/14/dining/14curious.html)   Maybe the scent of this cream is similar in that some people can smell it and others can't?  I don't know, but I do know that I'm sitting here writing this with a glob of it directly under my nose and I swear to you, I don't smell anything other than a very faint slightly medicinal smell.

So, in conclusion - I really like it.  I think it does a fantastic job and doesn't stink, but it is a tidgey bit pricey.  I would give it 7/8 tentacles.

Rating: 7/8 tentacles

  1. Well your face probably SMELLS.

But really, all the reviews were one way or another, there must be something in it. Solution: definitely try it for yourself before buying, if you can.
