Hot Minute Review: CoverGirl LashBlast Luxe

Dixie

I just can't with this product, you guys. What's even the point? Before I bought it, I should have stopped to think about how a shimmery mascara would turn out on my lashes, but luckily for the content of this site I didn't.

There just aren't a whole lot of words I can muster about the new CoverGirl LashBlast Luxe Mascara. In general, I really like the Lash Blast line. I've used the Fusion, the 24 Hour, and the Volume, all with great success. But the Luxe? Not so much. It applies very much like the Fusion - no clumping, no flaking, no smudging. But the shimmer. Why? It doesn't sparkle or shimmer at all. The only thing the shimmer accomplishes is reflecting light away from your lashes, making your lashes disappear. And that's the opposite of what mascara is supposed to do!

In short, don't buy this product. Just don't. With the other great options available from the Last Blast line, there just is no reason to waste your hard-earned cash. 0/8 tentacles. Boo.

Rating: 0/8 tentacles

Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara: Green Good?

Dixie

I will never learn. I mean, I try but I don't. One day I'll learn to stick with the mascara that works, but until that day I will continue to peruse the mascara sections of the drugstore, looking for a new and possibly exciting formula to share with you Hot Inkers. Now, I'm kind of a secret hippie; we all know this. So when I saw the Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara on sale, I might have squealed in the middle of CVS. Just a little. Not loud enough for the lady browsing in the vitamins and supplements aisle to hear me. Ahem. After my squeal, I was skeptical, but decided to buy it anyway. Hot Ink gives me an excuse to experiment.

Rimmel Extra Super Lash: Superman Does Good. This Mascara Does Well.

Pinky McLadybits

Yes, another Rimmel Mascara! Obviously it isn't that I don't like the other Rimmel mascaras that I have used, since they all rated quite well. It is rather that I would like to see if any of their mascaras are terrible. I want to see if the less expensive choices in their mascara line are as good as the more expensive choices. (Not that Rimmel is at all expensive. Less than $8 for any of their mascaras? SCORE!)

My latest pickup is Rimmel Extra Super Lash Mascara. It cost less than $3 and purports to "lift and build" lashes by being a "body building mascara". Let's have a look, shall we?

Rimmel London Glam'Eyes Day 2 Night Mascara: I Traded The Day For Night

Pinky McLadybits

Mascara is usually the only makeup I'll wear for stretches of time. It's all very tied into my strong conviction that without some very black mascara on my lashes at all time, I look like I have no eyelashes. It makes for a weird ginger-albino kind of look.

So, I really go through mascaras. I think those of you that have read this site for any length of time probably noticed my near-constant state of trying out different mascaras. There are so many brands, sub-categories within the brands, and promises to be made by the mascaras. It gets crazy. However, I seem to have found a new favorite brand, replacing the old stand-by of Maybelline Great Lash (which stinks terribly and irritates my eyes now).

CoverGirl LashPerfection: More like "TrashRejection", Amirite?

Nora

My love for CoverGirl's LashBlast mascara has been documented here before, but upon a bored trip to Target one day, I decided to branch out the tiniest bit and try a different CoverGirl mascara. Read: CoverGirl LashPerfection Mascara was a dollar cheaper, and I'm broke, so I thought I would try it. I didn't think anything could go wrong; it has “Perfection” in its name, after all.

You'd think that I'd have learned by now that sometimes spending just the tiniest bit of extra money pays off big time in the end. For example: the $20 Brazilian bikini wax I once tried, dying my hair blond in my friend's basement sink, and buying CoverGirl LashPerfection mascara.

Rimmel London ScandalEyes Mascara: Monocles Popping Everywhere!

Pinky McLadybits

I just can't help myself. I have to try different mascaras. Sure, Rimmel London Sexy Curves Mascara was nearly perfect. I still need to keep trying other mascaras to find the perfect one! Of course, how will I know that it is the perfect one until after using all of the other mascaras...

I digress. I decided to stay in the Rimmel London Family and chose ScandalEyes Mascara for my next go-round. The packaging is orange and sparkly, the brush is supposed to be the biggest ever, and it was under $6. SOLD.

Beautiful, But Definitely Not Easy or Breezy: Covergirl Lash Blast 24 Hour Mascara

Dixie

I've been conflicted about the Covergirl Lash Blast 24 Hour Mascara since I bought it a couple months ago. At first, I liked it. Then, I hated it. Then, I was ambivalent about it. But, I finally decided that I like it. The rollercoaster of emotions that this mascara has put me through should be an indicator, you're going to love it or hate it. And it's not for the inexperienced mascara user.

Upon looking at the package, you will find that there is no real hint about how this mascara is going to look on your lashes - it is listed as neither volumizing nor lengthening. It is merely billed as a "24 Hour" wear, with no indication whether it is a dye or a waterproof formula. But I figured I was going to review it anyway, so it wouldn't be a total loss even if I hated it.

Hot Tip: Make the Most of Your Mascara

Dixie

As you may know, I am always on the search for the Holy Grail of mascaras. The longer my search goes on, the more I start to think that I will never find my dream mascara that volumizes and lengthens without clumping, flaking, or running. However, whatever mascara I happen to be experimenting with or settling on until I find The One, there are a few things I do to make the most out of each application.

A theater friend in college told me that the easiest way to plump up your lashes is to apply mascara on the tops of your lashes. Sounds a little difficult, but once you've done it a couple of times, it becomes second nature.

First, curl your lashes and apply your mascara on the undersides starting at the very base of the lashes, as usual. This will help the lashes hold their curl. Next, close your eye very slightly and hold the mascara over the ends of your lashes, top side. Then, open your eyes all the way, dragging your lashes across the brush. Finally, separate your lashes using a metal lash comb. The tines on plastic lash combs are too close together to separate, metal lash combs are far more effective. Sephora and Sonia Kashuk both have excellent combs. And viola! More well-defined lashes.

Rimmel London Sexy Curves Mascara: Baby Got Back

Pinky McLadybits

While we were on vacation? I had a stupid eye infection in my right eye. I couldn't wear contacts for ten days. That was devastating. I also had to put actual ointment in my eye. That was disgusting. Have you ever tried to squirt ointment into your eye? While nearly blind? Oh, I also had my hand in a fucking splint at the time. So, half-blind, one hand in a splint, velcro straps all akimbo near my delicate eyes, and I'm attempting to make a pocket of my lower lid and squeeze ointment into it. It was like rubbing my eyeball with vaseline. So gross.

All of that to tell you that I had to throw out my very expensive Benefit They're Real! Mascara because there was a chance that the infection was on the brush or whatever and I did not want that infection again. So, into the trash $22 went. I may be acting dramatic about this. It was probably time to toss it anyway. But fuck that eye infection.

Givenchy's Phenomen'Eyes: Crazy Brush, Insane Lashes?

Glam

Fact: As a strong, fierce, independent Asian woman, I have totally dinky lashes. I'm constantly searching for any mascara that will give me any sort of lash definition and I'm constantly disappointed by beauty company's claims of "bigger, bolder lashes." I've bought drug-store brands and I've bough high-end brands, both having the same amount of disappointments.

And then I found Givenchy's Phenomen'Eyes.

Half medieval torture device, half glamour saviour, Phenomen'Eyes is a wondrous product. As I've said, I have really garbage eye lashes that are not only short and super hard to curl, but they're really fine and no matter how hard I try, they NEVER keep their curl nor do they even seem visible.

Old Faithful: CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara

Dixie

Brace yourselves, I'm about to review my first non-hippie product. I know, I had to sit down and have a sip of water as well. So, I'm going to tell you about a product that is a staple of mine. It doesn't particularly blow my socks off, but it never, ever lets me down. I know I'm preaching to the light-eyelashed choir, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a dependable mascara in your makeup tool kit.

Mascara can make or break your look - it can either give a nice frame around your eye shadow colors or it can flake off on your cheeks, making you look like an overly dramatic soap opera actress. CoverGirl makes a great line of mascaras that really have never let me down and the LashBlast Fusion or, as I like to call it, The Purple One, is no exception.

Benefit They're Real! Mascara: Squeeze Them!

Pinky McLadybits

I've been lazy with my eyebrows because my new bangs cover them pretty well. I decided to take charge and get myself to the Benefit Brow Bar at the local mall. I'll tell you more about that later.

This product was sold to me after the brow session (they are good at the Benefit counter) when I was handed off to one of the makeup girls. Benefit's They're Real Beyond Mascara was the big sell and I was told twice about the amazing brush that applied this game-changing mascara. When the makeup girl grabbed the mascara to demo it, of course they were out of the fancy disposable applicators and she had to use a regular brush.

Watch Me Wave My Magic (Mascara) Wand!: Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous

 Replica

I have a lot of hangups with this type of thing - I don't wear lower lash color since it melts on my face and I feel like Bimbo the Clown. I also have colorless lashes so unless you dig that stuff right in there, I get a weird halo effect around the eyes that is mildly disconcerting. And for some strange reason, I only ever see about six options in the black, so black, blackedy-dark-blue black, coal black, black as my skeptical soul, and ...blackest black? categories. Oh - and the ever-useful electric blue category, but wherefore art mine browns?

Revlon Lash Fantasy Total Definition Mascara: Yes, please.

Tamatha

Given my affinity for all things natural, you might be surprised that A) I buy pretty much all my make-up at the drug store and B) I am a seriously loyal Revlon customer. It all started back in 1990 when Revlon was one of the first big make-up companies to stop testing on animals. I wanted to support this great move on their part, so I started buying their products pretty exclusively. And I've been supporting them ever since.*

I've tried a few of Revlon's mascaras over the years, and the Lash Fantasy (terrible name aside) is my favorite. *Especially* since it now has my favorite style of mascara wand--the kind with the rubber bristles. These flexible bristles are so much better than the traditional, stiffer ones.

Maybe It's NOT Maybelline... Ok, It's Definitely Not Maybelline.

Author: Metric Jenn

As you, dear internet person, have no doubt read every last article I've ever written, I can assume that you have now become familiar with my spending habits and penchant for expensive things. Well, this review is a bit of a departure from that, because I'm in a 'saving money mode' right now. So my hunt for a good mascara has only resulted in the mediocre Dior Iconic, which I gave a measly 4/8 tentacles.  After testing what the cheaper brand Maybelline had to offer with the Falsies Volume Express, I can honestly say that I think I should go back and give the Dior mascara a MUCH higher rating and that I should always trust my instinct to SPEND MOAR. Because *this* Maybelline mascara? Is total and complete crap.

ULTA Lash Icon: You Keep Using That Word!

Author: Pinky McLadybits

I left the house today. I shouldn't have done it, because I went to ALL of the stores and bought MOST of the things. To be fair, I was looking for an item more elusive than a unicorn: a pair of gold, opera-length gloves. Needless to say, I did not find them. But I found lots of other stuff!

My first stop was ULTA, but that was because I had a $5 off coupon AND I needed mascara and nail polish topcoat. I left with a polish basecoat, polish topcoat, some baked eyeshadow, and ULTA Lash Icon Volume Mascara in Soft Black.

Now Batting: e.l.f. Mineral Infused Mascara

Author: Kolby

If I had to choose a favorite feature on my own face, I'd choose my eyes. They're green and almond shaped, and I've gotten a fair amount of compliments on them. So, when I'm putting my face on in the morning, I often pay a little extra attention to the ol' peepers. Liners, shadows, a little bit of mascara - all to accentuate what I wake up with every morning (which, yeah, you're never going to see me walking around with just what I wake up with in the morning). And I think I do a pretty darn good job of it. The only product that consistently threatens to ruin a perfectly lovely coating of eye slap is mascara. Gah! Lumps, clumps, globs, smears - all of it pisses me off, and boy, do I hate starting over.

Lashing Out: Mascara X

Author: Rusty

There’s a lot of mascaras out there. Like, seriously, it’s almost stupid how many options you have to smear goop all over your eyelashes. It’s enough to give anyone fits and I can’t tell you how many women I know who have more than four mascaras rolling around in a makeup drawer somewhere, and they’re not really happy with any of them.

How happy you are with any given mascara depends on what you’re looking for - and what I’m looking for is a high quality mascara that will darken my lashes without clumping if I choose to apply more than one layer and leave them in good condition for curling just in case I get a wild hair up my ass and decide to curl my eyelashes.

For this, I use MAC Cosmetic’s Mascara X.

Define-A-Lash Volume Mascara by Maybelline

Author: Park

I have tired eyes.  The kind of tired eyes where people I’ve never met come up to me and ask if I’m okay. (I usually was until they made that concerned face and patted my arm).  I usually try to combat that tiredness by sleeping an extra 15-20 minutes and then running through my morning routine.  If I’ve put on moisturizer, I consider that a victory.  However, I’ve been told that actually taking a few minutes and putting on some mascara can make you look much more awake. Therefore, I’ve decided to wake up earlier every day this week and…okay, I can’t keep up the charade, I put it on in the bathroom at work.

Cure for Light Lashes? e.l.f. Essentials Regular and Waterproof Mascara Duo

Ever since Kolby sent me a text about her love of e.l.f. products found at Target, I've wanted to try something. I was running low on my current mascara and wanted something different and inexpensive. I headed to Target and straight for the beauty section. It took a moment, but I finally spied the e.l.f. section and gasped. They have SO MUCH STUFF and SO INEXPENSIVE. I chose the e.l.f. Essentials Regular and Waterproof Mascara Duo in black and hoped it wouldn't make my eyes burn.
