I remember a period in the 90s when they were everywhere; in goody bags at birthday parties, as prizes at cheap carnivals, as things you could exchange tickets for at Chuck E. Cheese. They reigned supreme. I probably had like seven of them floating around in my bedroom at one point and all of them stayed firmly somewhere between green and blue (causing all my friends to go “ooooooo, you’re in LOVE!” but we were in elementary school and dumb).
Anyway, I haven’t see them in a while which may be because I’m sort of an adult now or maybe they’re just less popular. But my fond memories of them are probably what attracted me to NYX Cosmetics Mood Lip Gloss.
This winter I decided to step away from my usual lip liner + gloss formula and try something a little softer, a little gentler and a little less likely to leave lip prints on my wine glass. Tinted balm seemed just the ticket. Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm had good buzz (ba dum dum) in the beauty community, and I'd just gotten Fresh's Sugar Lip Treatment in Rose from Sephora for my birthday so the time was perfect for a head to head match up.

The product claims " A single slick of Sexy Mother Pucker™ can fool your lips into looking and feeling fuller. It features SUPERFILL™ microspheres that explode in volume up to 10X when they absorb moisture, and circulation-enhancing LIPSWELL™ natural plant oil infusion to increase blood flow and make lips look almost instantly lusher."
They lied. I swiped my lips with the lipgloss and waited to see the results. The product warns that "Sexy Mother Pucker™ activates on contact. It's likely that you'll notice a bit of a buzz (and likely, create one)."

You may remember that I have a slight lip balm addiction. In addition to meaning that I must be no more than two feet away from a lip balm at all times, this addiction also means that lipsticks and I have a problem. They just disappear. Or, if I'm really lucky, I end up looking like I'm wearing only lip liner (and too much of it too boot). Note: no lip liner has actually been applied to my lips, but the lipstick has seemingly migrated to just the edges of my lips--lovely! At the same time, I'm often drawn to lipsticks (they're less of a "commitment" than other forms of make-up) and I own far more than any woman who rarely wears the stuff probably
should. What can I say? Hope (or perhaps delusion) springs eternal.
