In April, a man in the Shetland Islands found a message in a bottle that has recently been certified as the oldest one ever found. It spent 98 years floating before it was pulled from the sea. Have you ever found and/or responded to a message in a bottle? (National Geographic)
Well, this is certainly another way to send a message. A woman in New Zealand, recently divorced, sent her wedding ring into space on a homemade rocket. Definitely more poetic than simply pawning the ring. (io9)
This charming video comes to us via KatSings. There's something for everyone here, whether you're a fan of Sesame Street, Doctor Who, the Avengers, Newsroom, the Hunger Games, or just enjoy a catchy tune. (EW)
T. Rex. High. Heels. YES. I wish there were more details available about these shoes, like who made them and how can I buy them?? (The Gloss)
Musical act/walking fashion disasters LMFAO has clarified that they are NOT breaking up, but merely taking a hiatus. Oh, good. I was SO worried there for a second. (MTV)
You gotta love it when a photographer catches something at precisely the right moment. (Pleated Jeans)
There's a possibility that Facebook could be using info from Datalogix to sell you ads based on your prescription and over-the-counter drug purchasing habits. If that makes you uncomfortable, read this article on how to opt-out. (Blisstree)
What do you think about this woman's proposal to put teenage girls on IUDs in order to prevent teen pregnancy? (The Stir)
MySpace, under new management since Justin Timberlake and friends bought it a few years back, recently released a video to show off its revamped design. It definitely looks sleeker, but the question is, does anyone other than musicians care about MySpace anymore? (Laughing Squid)
Since the release of iOS 6 last week, there have been some, uh, bugs in Apple's newest Apple Maps app, to say the least. Here's a collection of images that poke fun at the glitches. (Uproxx)
The best thing about that MySpace video was the soundtrack - "Heartbeat" by JJAMZ. Here's the official video for the song.
I don't love the IUD thing. If I'm not mistaken, there's a lot of potential for problems with infection and the like (even if it is less than previously), and it doesn't prevent STDs, just pregnancy. And *mandating* them is a terrible idea. 1 - people who choose to wait shouldn't have to have anything in their uteruses (uteri? what the fuck is the plural of that?). 2 - It creates even less need to be self aware and responsible than traditional birth control methods. If you don't have to think about it, it may reduce the amount of time you spend debating to have sex in the first place (though obviously this is an extrapolation on my part, not scientific fact). Also, aren't they only intended for people who have already had children?
ReplyDeleteIt's not that hard to remember to take a damned pill every day - I've done it for a decade and missed it maybe a handful of times. I get that saying "be safe" isn't cutting it, but I'm not certain this is a viable solution.
Also? One of the comments on that said that she didn't want chemicals and shit in her daughter, and that she practices natural, healthy birth control with withdrawal. I laughed out loud and closed the tab. Good luck to that chick's kid.
