Birchbox Treats: Kiehl's Abyssine Cream+

Pinky McLadybits

This tiny little jar of amazing was the favorite item from my very first Birchbox. Kiehl's Abyssine Cream+ was so tiny that I thought I would only get one use out of the cream that promised to protect my skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

My second Birchbox has arrived and the third will no doubt be here as soon as July10th, but I still have my little jar of Kiehl's Abyssine Cream+ sitting in my medicine cabinet.

If you are like me, you probably wonder just what the hell Abyssine is. Straight from the Kiehl's website: Cool Kiehl’s Fact: The Abyssine 657 “survival molecule” is a polysaccharide found in the depths of the ocean. The ingredient is derived from microorganisms discovered near the Galapagos hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 3,000 meters where the algae is able to adapt itself to the harshest conditions.

I still don't know what the fuck the Abyssine 657 is. But I like it! As with most creams that are sold in such small doses, only small amounts are needed to cover your face and neck after washing. I was afraid that the Kiehl's Abyssine Cream+ would be thick, like Noxema or something. It isn't that thick, but just a swipe of the tiny jar's contents was more than enough to smooth over my freshly cleaned neck and face.

My skin tingled slightly after application, but it wasn't unpleasant and it wasn't long-lived. My face was so soft and free of dry patches and flakes after using the cream. I was quite pleased. I've used it twice a day for most of the days I have had it and only had problems when I stopped using the Kiehl's and tried out a new moisturizer sent by Birchbox.

Based on the small amount I had to use, I would recommend Kiehl's Abyssine Cream+ for people with skin that likes to be an asshole, like mine does! However, $48 for a 1.69 fluid ounce jar can be prohibitive.

  1. I got this sample in my Birchbox, too, and LOVED it! Turned right around and bought the full-sized jar. I've used it every night and my skin really feels great. In the summer, my skin doesn't need a lot of extra moisturizer, thanks to the Ohio humidity, but I'm really hoping that this stuff will be good in the winter.

The full-size jar is small, but you're not kidding when you say that a teeeeeeeny tiny bit goes a long way, so it will last quite awhile.
