Ask Ink: Fighting the Fly-aways

"Just wanted to know if you know about a good product to control static in hair. I have curly hair, but recently been straightening it and I guess this weather from the NE has been messing with it."

Ah yes, the eternal quest of the curly-haired lady - making those frizzy, static-y rogue hairs lay down and behave. Without knowing the the porosity (low, medium, or high) and texture (fine, medium, or coarse) of your hair, I can make an educated recommendation as to what to use to tame the static, whether you are wearing your hair natural or straightening it. A good all-around product to use is the No Frizz line made by Living Proof. The two products you may want to try out are the Straight Making spray or cream (cream or spray depends on the amount of hair you have) and the Wave Shaping spray or cream. I will tell you, the products tend to be a bit on the pricey side so, really, you can probably get away with using the Wave Shaping to wear your hair either natural or straightened. The key ingredient PolyfluoroEster is in both products.

Additionally, I have a couple of lower cost suggestions if the Living Proof line is beyond the scope of your budget. Coconut oil is a good, all-around static tamer. Scrunch or comb (depending on your style for that day) just a smudge of oil through your hair while it is wet. Dry and style as normal. Kolby reviewed Organix Brazilian Keratin Therapy Anti-Breakage Serum, which also helps prevent fly-away.  Also, Vee tells me that you can carry a dryer sheet in your purse to whip out and smooth over your hair in a pinch. I've not tried this since I gave up on straightening my hair years ago, but it's a very simple, low-cost option. Good luck!

  1. Excellent tips, Dixie! I used to rub a little lotion (just typical skin lotion) on my palms and then run my hands through my hair. Which helps for a bit, but doesn't last long and if you keep doing it, you just end up with greasy hair!
